Whoa that's a wild looking piece of walnut! Nice guitar. From your pictures, it looks like a satin finish -- what did you use? |

Russell, I like your combination of woods. The holly really makes those dark woods stand out! And, hey, can you see the face in...oh, never mind. |

Wow, Russell That is really nice. Beautiful color combination. I love that binding. Is there purfling there or is that just really thick binding? Ron ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Beautiful...very colorful. I think that holly frames it all quite nicely...if the binding were dark the whole instrument would have looked and felt darker and heavier...with the holly as a lighter accent it brings out the lighter tones in the Walnut back (which looks spectacular). |

WOW! Nice! I got some walnut that looks very similar to that. You did an excellent job with the color combinations, also. Good eye. I have to ask my wife what colors go good with others. WOW! Nice! ![]() ![]() |

OK Russell, well I suppose it's OK. ![]() Very Nice as usual and if it sounds as good as your others it'll be great. Is that the same as my Redwood? If so whoopee! Andy's Claro? Love the finish, it really lets the wood declare that it's wood. You and Dave will soon have George worried! Colin |

Thanks Guys ![]() The finish is a combination of Danish Oil and Shellac, the customer the guitar was for doesn't have his guitars grain filled, and walnut has big pores, and tends to penerate Walnut too much, so I used a polished shellac layer as a seal coat then applied danish oil over the top. Carlton there is a face ![]() As for the sound of the guitar it sounds good, very strong mid range as you would expect with this combination. I will share some soundclips once its owner has recorded some. Ron you are right there is a purfling back and front. Craig the bridge is a bit of an experiment at the customers request, I like it as it brings the bass forward, which on this combo is good, however if it had a european top I suspect it would put it out of balance. BobC - We have to thank Hank M for the redwood, it is a beautiful piece of wood. Colin Your top is the same. Its not Claro it is actually English Walnut, from Andy of course. |

She's a STUNNER Russel. That is a guitar I would say as being built in the "craftsman" style. I really like the mellowness (yea a new word!) of it's appearance. I think I will print it off for insperation! Thanks Shane |

Shane, that high quality but understated style is very typical of UK luthiers, Russell here, and Dave are both great exponents of the type. Of all the luthiers I know only one has a power buffer in his shop, and many offer a sheen as their standard finish and a glossy buffed look only as an option which they'll try and put you off having. You'll rarely see any pearl or abalone either, I used it once and I thought it made the guitar look "cheap", so it was one I gave away. One of my friends recently bought a guitar from a well known US custom builder and (nearly) the first thing he did was get the 0000 out and break the gloss finish, and boy did it look better, you could see the wood rather than the finish. All a matter of what style you like and get used to seeing I guess. Russell, My redwood is the same, eh, GREAT! Hope I can do it the same honour that you did. By the way I just got a big pack of veneers and burls from Anita, so if you need something special for a rossette let me know. Colin |

Thanks for that explanation Colin. One of things that got me hooked to guitar making was all wood bindings and alternate tonewoods. I have been experimenting with rosette options using only wood and coloured lines. Russel's guitar here has just confirmed my deep appreciation for the understated! Again, very well done! Shane |

Russell, As it has been said, you have a great combo of woods. I am also a fan of thinner body designs. I bet it’s comfortable to play! What are the dimensions of your sides? Thanks for sharing. I hope to hear it as well. Wade |
